Perhaps you're thinking of the Pikes Peak Highway which goes over 14,000'? That's a dirt road, so it would be memorable. Some other notables are Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park which tops out at 12,183' (connects Estes Park with Grand Lake), and Mt. Evans road which is paved all the way to the parking lot at 14,130'. Also at 5000' you weren't even to the foothills yet ;) Eisenhower Pass on I-70 is just over 11,000' and Vail Pass is just under it. Fwiw, even turbo diesels exhibit noticable power loss at altitude.
